By David Britland

“Noel Britten has to be the funniest comedy magician since Tommy Cooper.” I’m quoting from Noel Britten’s reviews as he sits opposite me in a pizza restaurant in Central London. “They should get out more often,” says Noel as he winces at the accolade. Another review talks of his “storming the audience,” and still another of his “fast earning a reputation as one of the country’s top comedy magicians” and having the audience “helpless with laughter.” Noel is modest about his achievements, but the reviews are all true, as anyone who has seen his act will gladly agree. He is very funny — funny enough to work without props, crossing the border between magician and comedian with ease. It is a talent that makes him a favorite of magic conventions and one that has taken him from street magic to the UK’s top comedy clubs, as well as creating the Bizarre Bath Walk, a tourist attraction that is listed as a “must see” event in many travel guides. I remind him that it’s been a long journey since he used to busk on the streets of Bath with his head in a bucket of water. “Not that long,” says Noel. “I’ll still stick my head in a bucket when the occasion demands.” He’s not joking.

If you were to ask someone of the baby boomer generation or older how they became interested in magic, odds are that a Mysto Magic Set will be mentioned somewhere within the reflective and longing conversation. Conversely, when members of subsequent generations are asked the same question, while S.S. Adams and TV Magic Cards are bound to pop up, it’s a good bet that the name Tenyo will arise. And for good reason. The Japanese company has been marketing baffling pocket tricks for close to five decades now. Their track record is very impressive, with some of their items now having reached that lofty status of classic. Even when one of the yearly new releases walked the fine line between cleverness and convolution, magicians still couldn’t deny the absolute devilishness of the method and had to admire the thinking and craftsmanship that went into the trick’s creation. Steve Brooks, Peter Loughran, and Jason Palter are three such magicians. They not only cop to loving Tenyo products and to the influence those tricks had on their individual formative years, but they have taken their admiration to the next level. And no one could be more surprised about the outcome than themselves.

An Interview with Writer/Director Sean McGinlyBy

John Lovick

The Great Buck Howard, a Magnolia Pictures film written and directed by Sean McGinly, opens in limited release this month. It is the story of a law-school dropout, played by Colin Hanks (King Kong, Orange County), who, as a way to break into show business, gets a job as an assistant to a past-his-prime mentalist played by John Malkovich (Burn After Reading, Changeling). Buck Howard, you will not be surprised to hear, is loosely based on Kreskin, whom McGinly worked for more than a decade ago for a brief time. From that experience, McGinly has fashioned a simple, sweet, almost old-fashioned comedy about show business, growing up, finding your way in the world, the desire for love and applause, and being true to yourself. Contributing Editor John Lovick sat down with McGinly after a well-received screening at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January to talk about the inspiration for the title character, working with such a talented cast, and what he hoped to say with this story of a washed-up performer.

When “The Impossible” was presented onstage at the Abbott’s Get-Together in 1968, it caused a furor, largely because it was discovered that the trick — actually Harbin’s Zig-Zag Girl — really should not have been performed.

Stefan Warmuth started with an idea: a magic show that flowed from start to finish with no emcee, the acts blending one from to the next. Last December in Germany, he saw a cast of international magic stars bring that idea to the stage.

John Guastaferro has generated massive amounts of buzz from close-up magicians around the world, and Joshua Jay is pleased to welcome him to “Talk About Tricks.” John gives us Intro-verted, an extremely tight, intelligent, multi-phased piece of card magic that is light on sleights and high on impact. England’s Chris Congreave presents Picked, an elegant, workhorse card routine destined to go into your act. If you’re looking for magician foolers, there are two great ones this month: Shannon Clark’s All’s Fair Sandwich and Donny Orbit’s Poly-Deck. And for a sweet non-card interlude, Vinny Deponto returns with an impromptu trick using Post-it notes.

DEAR SHOW DOCTOR: I am working on my close-up show, and I want to be able to perform at restaurants, corporate events, and parties. When I show my magic to my friends, I get many different opinions on what works and what doesn’t work. Some folks say they want me to do more jokes and comedy, others think this takes away from the mystery of the magic. Who should I listen to and what do you suggest? — Bobby J.

WORKING RESTAURANTS

Just when I thought I’d written about this topic from every conceivable angle, here we are again. As it turns out, it appears that there can never be too much written on this topic if some of the chatter I’ve seen on Internet forums is to be used as a gauge. Despite the amount of information available — including books by Kirk Charles, Al The Only, Scott Hollingsworth, and others — there still seems to be a preponderance of cluelessness out there concerning the nuts and bolts of performing restaurant magic.

Geo Surprise is a perfect example of a trick that packs flat, plays big, and is a blank canvas on which to create a custom presentation. It’s no surprise that this gem is quite the favorite of many performers worldwide. It was first published in 2000, in Don’s now-out-of-print book Things That Fell Out Of My Head. The effect is that a round balloon is apparently cut to form a geo-blossom balloon — a flower-shaped balloon. After teaching the handling of the effect, we will share three complete presentations: a straight magic effect, an allegory suitable for children, and a motivational routine.

Two years ago, while visiting Toronto, I became enamored with the work of Stewart James. At 31 Faces North, the exclusive gathering for academic-minded magic types, I encountered a wealth of information about the brilliant Canadian inventor. Many of James's creations intrigued me, but I developed a particular interest in the Miraskill principle. While there are myriad Miraskill routines in print, each with its own strengths, I wanted to add to the canon a straightforward effect with a dramatically satisfying third phase. The following handling was inspired primarily by the work of John Bannon and Allan Slaight. Effect: The performer engages a volunteer in a heated game of War. Despite all shuffling being done by the volunteer, the performer is able to predict the outcome of three rounds of play.
